Livermore VA Hospital Mosaic Mural Finished

Henry,

After all this time it looks like we're going to finish. All that's left is caulking the expansion joints. The local paper did an article on the mosaic (The Independent). Once again I'd like to thank you and your company for all the support, without you we couldn't have done this.

Once again thanks for everything, and thanks to Jeff Carder and Dale Foster for all their help!

Unfurled Mosaic Mural

Dear Henry and Steve,

We did it! The mosaic installation for which you so generously provided Laticrete thinset and Spectralock is on the wall and it is gorgeous! We can't thank you enough for providing such superior materials to work with, and it's a great feeling to know that the mosaic will stay strong and beautiful indefinitely.

I'm attaching a press release about the project as well as a couple of photos. Designer for the project is Lin Schorr of Lin Schorr Mixed Media Mosaics, and Project Manager is Pam Goode. The mosaic is located on the outside wall at Ciel Gallery, 128 E. Park Avenue, Charlotte, NC  28203.

Again, I can't thank you enough for your support, and I look forward to thanking you both in person one day.

All the best,

Pam

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
New Public Art Ribbon Cutting in SouthEnd Charlotte January 18

Images Included: Overall Installation and 2 Details, Unfurled

Unfurled, a collaborative glass mosaic created by over fifty professional mosaic artists, has been installed in the heart of Southend Charlotte. A Ribbon Cutting Ceremony and dedication will be held Saturday, January 18 at 4:00. The public is cordially invited to attend and meet many of the artists involved in the 8' x 17' mural.

Coordinated by Pam Goode of Ciel Gallery + Mosaic Studio, the mosaic covers about 100 square feet on East Park Avenue. The lush art nouveau style design was created by Lin Schorr of Lin Schorr Mixed Media Mosaics, Novi, Michigan.

"Every city benefits from public art," says Goode, "and Charlotte is no exception. We wanted to add a piece to the Art & Design District that would be colorful, vivacious, interactive, and expertly constructed. The mosaic contains fun scavenger hunt elements such as a frog, heart, and chameleon camouflaged in the greenery. We want the public to explore the shapes and forms and hopefully become a bit inspired."

The project has been underway for about a year. Having worked together on several of Schorr's previous collaborative projects in Michigan, Goode was eager to team up in Charlotte. Once Schorr completed the design and carved it into manageable sections, Goode put out a call to artists and selected over fifty to participate. Soon the petals, leaves and ferns made their way to Charlotte from across the US as well as from Canada, Germany, and France.

"Response to the project has been fabulous," says Goode. "All of the art was donated; in fact, we received participation requests from about three times as many artists as we could use for this project. We knew we wanted to create a piece for Charlotte that would highlight the beauty of glass mosaic as well as provide as many artists as possible with a professional piece for their portfolios. We weren't able to secure funding through usual channels, so a successful Kickstarter campaign helped us cover the bulk of the installation costs, and Laticrete International generously donated adhesive and grout for the project."

Installers included Schorr, during a week-long visit from Michigan, as well as artists from Hickory, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Arizona and Georgia. Most of the grouters were local, adding to the Charlotte flavor of the artwork and giving even more artists an opportunity to participate. Charlotte iron forger Theron Ross provided the frame. "We're thrilled that Unfurled benefits not only art lovers in Charlotte," says Goode, "but global and local artists as well. It just fits perfectly with the mission of Ciel."

Ciel Gallery has been a Southend fixture since 2008, and was the first gallery in the US dedicated to fine art mosaics. Located at 128 East Park Avenue, Ciel features rotating juried exhibitions, outreach, and a full slate of classes as well as workshops by visiting artists from across the US. Partners Teresa Hollmeyer, Tina Alberni, and Goode all participated in the Southend mural.

Incredible Mosaic Artists World Wide Depend On Laticrete (Wow !)

Hi Henry,
I just wanted to compliment Art Mintie once again, as well as Frank in the technical department.
I arrived on the job site at the Children's Hospital to start the install today and found a PRIMED WALL, instead of the bare sheetrock as I had specified in my contract and my walk-through.  Egad!
And then I pulled my ace out of the hole and said 'Let's just call the technical department at Laticrete'.
Art was in a meeting and I spoke to Frank.  Art called me back as soon as he got out of his meeting and confirmed the solution I requested which was fresh bare drywall.  And now that's done and we go back tomorrow and do the install.  I don't have Frank's email but please pass my thanks on to him.
Laticrete to the rescue again!
I'll be posting pics on my Facebook mosaics page of the install and I'll mention Laticrete in the caption  :-)
Here's the first one that will go up in the morning of my trusty assistant Leigh Davis with crates of mosaic mesh sections and plenty of Laticrete MultiMax and grout :-)
Many thanks to all of you, best, Sonia

Mosaic Mural Tells The Time !

Incredible Mosaic Mural Art!

In 2005 Susan Marie commissioned a UWA* Graduate, artist Shaun Tan, to create a west-facing sundial, and now the perfect time and place has been found for its installation. As the Director of UWA Extension, part of UWA’s community outreach, Susan envisioned an accessible public artwork that celebrates a Centenary of UWA’s achievements.
Celebrating the University of Western Australia’s 100th year with a beautiful, timeless and inspiring artwork that will last far into the next century, the Hours to Sunset project pays tribute to the contribution of UWA’s graduate and academic cohort to Western Australia’s intellectual and artistic life.

The River Of Life

London-based mosaic artist Gary Drostle’s latest masterpiece commissioned by the University of Iowa

Drostle’s spectacular, 12’ x 47’ intricate porcelain and glass mosaic art mural. Inspired by the connection Iowa City and the state university both share with the Iowa River as it knifes directly through the center of each on its way to joining the Mississippi, Drostle’s concept for this mosaic mural centered on the river as the vision of well-being or a path through life, rather than just a state of being at a single moment in time.

Installed over masonry in the
traditional two-step process, the River of Life is manifested with ½” and ¼” unglazed Winkelman French porcelain mosaics interspersed with Bisazza mosaic glass highlights.

Sometimes we get to be involved with some really beautiful tilework. Such as this tile mural at the Courts Building in Charlotte, NC ...!

Full credit to:

The Tile installation company - David Allen Company

The Mural Tile Artists - Amy Baur and Brian Boldon of IN PLAIN SIGHT Art. (Brian is the guy who has figured out this technology, kiln fusing image to glass and clay tile and do so with such a high degree of success and excellence. Amy is the artist who does the IMAGE making.)
